Barong Dance
Barong, Bali’s traditional dance style, features some performers wearing costumes and masks with animal themes. The most popular type of barong performance is the Barong Ket dance. What then is Barong Ket?
When viewed from its shape, Barong Ket appears to be a cross between the animal shapes of tigers, lions, dragons, and cows. The complete body of Barong Ket is decorated in intricate, traditional Balinese cowhide sculptures, many of which have tiny glass mirrors inside.
Light that reflects off the glass mirror thus causes the Barong’s form to glitter. Barong Ket resembles a star because it is covered in feathers. Dry animal fur was used to make it.
